The Connaught Club held a whole series of events and activities throughout the day on Saturday 4th June to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
What a day it turned out to be. The gloomy weather at the start of the day soon gave way to blue sky and sunshine, and The Connaught Club celebrated in style.
The Club looked fantastic decked out in Union Jack flags and bunting, members looked resplendent in their red, white and blue outfits, and the flower planters and baskets on the terrace looked magnificent thanks to Louise Furlong who had planted out dozens of pelargoniums in the days leading up to the event
All the sports put on a great show with a series of fun versions of their games. Squash & Racketball kicked things off with their wooden rackets; Tennis ran a fast and furious Tie Break Tens tournament throughout the day; and the Bowls Green was packed for both the morning and afternoon sessions of quickfire fun games. What was particularly pleasing, and unexpected, was just how many members came down to the Green to have a go at Bowls for the first time, including many of our juniors – the youngest participants were just 4 years old!!
The food served up by the outside caterers Baked Salt was delicious and so different from the usual BBQ, all washed down with free bottomless Pimms. The bar staff were kept very busy quenching the thirst of participants and spectators.
The Jubilee Raffle turned out to be a huge success. The wonderful and extensive list of prizes on offer meant that ticket sales totaled an amazing £3,850. The top prize of Connaught Membership Package was won by Elvan Toker-Bucuk, while the Fortnum & Mason Jubilee Tea Party Hamper went to Janet Grogan. A huge thank you to all members for their generosity in donating around £1,500 of prizes and for buying tickets.
The terrace was jam packed all day with lots of tables and chairs having to be brought out from the pavilion. It really was a truly memorable Jubilee celebration bringing together all members and all sports sections of the Club.
These events do not just happen so a massive thank you to everyone involved. There are too many people to list here, but you know who you are.
Below are just a few of the pictures taken during the day.
